How to Register for Corporate Tax in the UAE

Check who must register, prepare the business and signatory documents, and understand the EmaraTax application and the obligations after approval.

Reviewed 12 September 2026. General guidance; confirm the requirements for your business with the relevant authority.

Corporate Tax registration establishes a taxable person’s record with the Federal Tax Authority. Once approved, the person receives a Corporate Tax Registration Number. Registration is separate from calculating tax, filing a return and making a payment. A business can have registration obligations even where its final tax payable is zero.

Check who is required to register

UAE companies, including free zone companies, should assess their registration obligations under the Corporate Tax law and implementing decisions. Certain exempt persons may also be required to register. A UAE branch of a domestic company is generally part of its parent rather than a separate taxable legal entity for registration.

For natural persons, the business-turnover test is different: business or business-activity revenue exceeding AED 1 million in a calendar year can trigger registration. Salary, private investment income and qualifying real estate investment income are excluded from that calculation. Do not apply a company’s registration rule to an individual without reviewing the facts.

Foreign entities require a separate assessment of their UAE connection and applicable registration rules. UAE-source income alone should not be presented as an automatic registration trigger in every case. Identify any permanent establishment, nexus, exemption or other relevant circumstance.

Establish the deadline for the person

The applicable date depends on legal status and the relevant event, such as incorporation or establishing a taxable presence. The historic 2024 registration timetable should not be republished as a future deadline. Confirm the current FTA rule for the entity and its dates.

For a newly incorporated UAE juridical person, review the applicable registration period promptly after formation. Do not wait until turnover exceeds AED 375,000: that figure is associated with the ordinary tax-rate band for taxable income, not a general company-registration threshold. If registration is already late, resolve the obligation and review any penalty or waiver position separately.

Prepare the supporting file

  • Current licence and incorporation or establishment documents.
  • Legal form, activities, registered address and contact information.
  • Ownership and branch details required by the application.
  • Identity documents for the relevant owners and authorised signatory.
  • Evidence of the signatory’s authority, such as the applicable constitutional document or resolution.
  • The financial year and other information requested for that person’s status.

Use the FTA service checklist for current document formats and upload limits. Match the legal name, numbers and dates across the application and evidence. Do not delay merely because an old checklist describes a bank account or another item as universally mandatory; check what the actual application requires.

Apply through the official EmaraTax service

Start from the FTA’s official Corporate Tax registration page and use its current sign-in method. Create or select the correct taxable-person profile. Avoid opening a duplicate record when the entity already exists in the account.

Complete the Corporate Tax application with the legal status, business, ownership, address and signatory information requested. Upload clear documents, check the financial year and review declarations before submission. The authorised person should understand and approve the information being provided.

Save the application reference. If another person assists, use the permitted authorisation process and retain control of the account; do not send passwords or one-time codes through an enquiry form.

Follow the application through to approval

Monitor the application and the FTA’s requests. A query may concern inconsistent documents, an unclear ownership chain or signatory authority. Respond to the specific issue with accurate evidence and retain the correspondence.

After approval, check the registration certificate and the period shown in the account. Save the number and certificate with the company records. A submission acknowledgement is not the same as registration approval.

Plan the obligations after registration

Set up bookkeeping and a calendar for the return and payment deadline. Review any free zone treatment, reliefs and related-party arrangements before the return is prepared. Registration does not confirm that a relief or 0% treatment applies.

Update the tax record when required company information changes. A licence renewal or ownership amendment does not necessarily update EmaraTax automatically. Keep evidence of submitted changes and review unresolved portal requests.

Late registration and the first-period waiver

The FTA has a separate initiative for waiving the late-registration penalty when the first return, or applicable annual declaration, is filed within the specified seven-month period. It is linked to the first period, not one universal July deadline. Review the conditions and the taxpayer’s actual dates using the official waiver guidance.

Is registration the same as VAT registration?

No. They concern different taxes and have separate tests and records. Having a VAT number does not by itself complete Corporate Tax registration.

Does a free zone licence remove registration?

No. Assess the company’s Corporate Tax obligations even where qualifying free zone treatment may be available.

What support can MNK provide?

MNK can help organise the application information and coordinate agreed registration support. The FTA approves the application and may request further evidence.
